Product introduction

The HENDL Concrete Segment Tong is a mechanical lifting attachment designed to grip, lift, transfer and position curved precast tunnel lining segments in a horizontal orientation. Its primary lifting mechanism combines mechanical gripping jaws with an automatic safety lock, while four guiding arms assist with positioning the segment. The product family can be engineered for loads up to 60 tonnes; higher capacities require a dedicated engineering design.

Standard Capacity And Dimensions

The 60-tonne figure is a product-family upper capacity, not a certified working load for the unit shown or a rating across all segment geometries. The base P021 device handles horizontally oriented segments and has no rotation function. Jaw opening, segment radius, dimensions, operating cycles and crane interface are engineered for each application. Sensors, audible/visual indications, powered jaw actuation or powered orientation belong only to separately developed versions and must not be attributed to the illustrated mechanical unit. No unverified certification, successful test result or universal lifting suitability is implied.

Working Principle

The tong is positioned over a compatible segment. Four guiding arms assist alignment, while the mechanical jaws grip the segment during hoisting and the automatic safety lock remains engaged throughout the lifting cycle. Once the segment is securely supported and the lifting mechanism is unloaded, the automatic release sequence can operate. The jaws and locking arrangement perform the load-retaining function; the guiding arms must not be represented as independent load-bearing jaws. The standard mechanical configuration requires no external electrical or hydraulic power.

Selection

Specify segment mass, curvature radius, overall dimensions, thickness, lifting points, surface condition and centre of gravity when selecting a tunnel segment grab. Polyamide contact pads are intended to help limit concrete surface damage when the contact arrangement is correctly engineered; damage-free lifting cannot be guaranteed without evaluating the application. Single- and multiple-segment handling require separate assessments of load distribution, suspension geometry and locking arrangements. Single-hook or twin-hook lifting interfaces, precast factory layouts, storage areas and TBM construction sites are addressed by project-specific configurations.

Gripping safety and engineered options

Depending on the configuration, provisions may include mechanical retention against unintended release, a mechanical open/closed indicator, guided-arm travel stops, secured pivot pins, replaceable polyamide pads, parking supports and model-specific inspection and operating instructions. Concrete contact stresses and load sharing are evaluated for the actual segment. Engineering alternatives include curvature-specific jaw geometry, arms suited to different thicknesses, replaceable guide shoes, dedicated single- or multiple-segment layouts, single- or twin-hook suspension, service access and storage fixtures. Sensor-monitored locking, audible/visual alerts, powered jaw operation and motorised load orientation are separate engineered variants, not standard functions of the fully mechanical P021 model. Rectangular or cylindrical concrete loads likewise require distinct application-specific designs.

Technical Figures For A Quote

For a technical quotation, provide segment drawings, individual mass, curvature radius, external dimensions, thickness, surface properties and centre-of-gravity data. State whether one or several segments will be handled per lift, the stacking and placement sequence, site conditions and lifting frequency. Include crane details, single- or twin-hook arrangement, hook dimensions and available hook height. Identify any required sensing, signalling or automation as a separate project requirement.

Questions

How does a Concrete Segment Tong operate, and does it need external power?

The base design is fully mechanical. Four guiding arms assist placement; the jaws grip during hoisting and an automatic safety lock remains engaged. When the segment is safely supported and the lifting mechanism unloaded, the automatic release cycle operates. External electric or hydraulic power is not needed for the base gripping function.

Can every tunnel segment be lifted at a 60-tonne capacity?

No. Up to 60 tonnes is the upper limit of the product family, not a universal rating. Permissible load depends on segment radius, dimensions, centre of gravity, grip points, single- or multiple-segment layout and crane interface. The rating of the illustrated machine cannot be established from the picture.

Can one tong lift single and multiple segments, and does the device rotate the load?

Single- and multiple-segment handling involve separately engineered gripping and load-sharing arrangements; suitability of the same unit for both must not be assumed. The basic P021 lifts and transfers horizontal segments without rotation. Powered orientation or sensor monitoring may be considered only in separate custom configurations.
