Product introduction

The HENDL Electric Coil Upender is a floor-mounted, motor-driven machine designed to tip steel and metal coils through 90° between horizontal-axis and vertical-axis orientations. Its C-shaped (Pacman-type) construction and electric motor–gearbox drive can be configured for applications up to 100 metric tonnes. Depending on the model and load, the 90° tipping time is specified within a 20–60-second range. Higher capacities and special coil geometries can be evaluated through custom engineering.

Working Principle

The coil is positioned on the machine support surfaces using the selected loading arrangement, with guides and mechanical restraints configured for the application. An electric motor and gearbox drive the C-shaped structure through a controlled 90° tipping movement between horizontal-axis and vertical-axis coil positions. The inverter manages acceleration, deceleration and the motion profile; PLC control can be added when required by the project. Depending on the configuration, mechanical and electrical travel limits, position feedback, emergency stop, audible/visual warnings and arrangements to prevent unintended movement on power loss can be incorporated. The final design depends on the load and site-specific safety requirements.

Selection

Selection is based on maximum coil mass, inside and outside diameters, width, centre of gravity, starting and final orientation, target tipping time, available footprint and loading/unloading method. Surface sensitivity, forklift or C-Hook access, electrical supply, operator access and safeguarding requirements also influence the design. The 100-tonne capacity describes the product-family limit; no single configuration is claimed to cover every coil geometry or to provide the same 20–60-second performance under all conditions.

Coil protection, safeguarding and custom engineering options

Coil-contact arrangements can use polyamide, UHMW-PE, polyurethane or rubber protection; a V-shaped cradle or purpose-built support, mechanical anti-roll stops and adjustable side guides can be engineered for the application. Forklift or C-Hook loading clearances, replaceable pads, compact layouts, maintenance access and service lockout features can be considered. Suitable configurations may incorporate mechanical/electrical travel limits, light curtains or safety laser scanners, audible/visual alerts, position sensors or encoders, braking/position-retention devices and perimeter guarding. Conveyor or production-line interfaces, automated loading/unloading, automatic centring, recessed or flush-floor installation and optional motorized base orientation are project-specific solutions. These are not standard features on every model; P011 is not a rail-guided transfer vehicle.

Questions

What is the maximum capacity of the Electric Coil Upender?

The HENDL Electric Coil Upender family can be configured for capacities up to 100 metric tonnes. Rated capacity, compatible coil geometry and operating duty are established for each project. Higher capacities may be evaluated through custom engineering.

How long does a 90° tipping cycle take?

Depending on the model and load conditions, the 90° tipping time can be specified within a 20–60-second range and adjusted with the appropriate drive configuration. This is not a guaranteed cycle time for every coil size and capacity.

Can the upender be integrated with conveyors or move coils between stations?

P011 is a stationary floor-mounted coil tipper. Conveyor or production-line integration, automated loading/unloading and optional motorized base orientation may be engineered for a project. Rail-guided transfer combined with upending is covered by a separate HENDL product family.
