HENDL sheet metal tong, lower support shoes

Product introduction

The HENDL Sheet Metal Tong is a motorized below-the-hook lifting equipment family designed to handle horizontally stacked steel sheet packs. Powered arms are positioned around the pack while engineered support shoes carry the load from underneath, rather than relying solely on side-surface friction. Two-arm, four-arm and multi-point arrangements can be engineered for sheet metal service centres, metal-processing lines and steel production operations.

Standard Capacity And Dimensions

Up to 35 tonnes is the upper design capacity of the HENDL product family, not a verified WLL for the pictured assembly. A sheet pack width of up to 4,500 mm and length of up to 16,500 mm are stated family design targets; they are not proof that one tong simultaneously meets every upper limit. The actual model capacity, jaw opening, support geometry, self-weight and duty rating are established for each project. Handling at up to 550°C applies only to specially engineered hot-sheet configurations. The maximum capacity, largest dimensions and hottest operating condition are not guaranteed together. Available options do not imply that a particular unit has completed testing, certification or installation of every safety feature.

Working Principle

The tong is aligned with the sheet pack to suit its length, width, stack height and available under-pack clearance. An electric gearmotor drives the gripping arms through a pinion-and-rack transmission. In the appropriate configuration, the lower support shoes engage sufficiently beneath the pack to carry its weight. Protection against unintended arm opening and uncontrolled movement after a power failure is engineered for the specific machine. Wired, wireless and PLC-integrated controls are available as distinct project configurations.

Selection

Selection starts with the sheet pack mass, length, width, stack height, entry clearance for support shoes, packaging or strapping, centre of gravity, pack integrity and duty cycle. On long packs, beam deflection, load distribution among the lifting points and relative movement of individual sheets require particular attention. The number of crane hooks, available headroom, cable-reel routing and storage layout influence both the structural design and the power/control arrangement.

Powered handling, load retention and engineered options

Project-dependent designs may include two, four or multiple lower-support engagement points, gearmotor-driven rack-and-pinion arms, protection against unintended opening, position holding after power loss, end-position sensing, mechanical travel stops and motor current/torque monitoring. Lower support shoes and replaceable rubber or polyurethane contact surfaces are selected for the sheet condition and temperature. Other engineered configurations may use screw-type drives, custom beam lengths, reduced headroom, single/double crane-hook suspension, battery or crane-supplied power, wired/radio/PLC controls, adjustable suspension for off-centre loads and serviceable wear components. Friction-clamping variants, unstrapped stacks and elevated-temperature applications require their own engineering assessment; suitability is never universal.

Technical Figures For A Quote

For a technical quotation, supply the minimum and maximum sheet pack masses, length, width, stack height, sheet thickness and whether the pack is strapped. Provide under-pack shoe clearance, stacking pitch, lift frequency, sheet temperature, surface-protection needs and load centre-of-gravity data. Please also specify crane hook arrangement, available headroom, cable reel or cable-carrier routing, electrical supply and your preferred control interface.

Questions

How does the Sheet Metal Tong lift a sheet pack?

An electric gearmotor and rack-and-pinion drive position the gripping arms. Once correctly engaged, the lower support shoes take the weight of the horizontal sheet pack from below. Load-holding and arm-movement safeguards are defined by the actual engineered mechanical and control arrangement.

Can one tong carry 35 t packs measuring 4,500 × 16,500 mm?

Not automatically. Up to 35 t is the family maximum, while 4,500 mm width and 16,500 mm length are upper design targets. Permissible loads and dimensions must be verified together for each tong, considering pack geometry, support locations, structural deflection and the crane arrangement. Larger applications require separate engineering.

Can it lift hot sheet packs or unstrapped stacks?

Operation at up to 550°C is considered only for dedicated hot-sheet designs, not all models. Strapped and unstrapped packs require distinct assessments of pack integrity, possible sheet slippage and support engagement. No suitability is assumed without validating the real operating conditions.
