Product introduction

The HENDL Mechanical Coil Tong is a below-the-hook lifting attachment designed to lift and transfer horizontally oriented steel and metal coils using an overhead crane, without an electrically powered gripping drive. Its load-actuated scissor mechanism and automatic mechanical locking arrangement support handling across a range of coil dimensions. The product family covers lifting capacities up to 25 metric tonnes and coil widths of 300–2,200 mm. Loads and dimensions beyond these ranges can be assessed through custom engineering.

Standard Capacity And Dimensions

Lifting capacity
up to 25 metric tonnes.
Coil width
300–2,200 mm.
Gripping
load-actuated mechanical scissor linkage, requiring no powered gripping drive.

Automatic mechanical latch holds the arms open when unloaded; opening under load is prevented.

Protective polyamide contact pads and a parking stand are provided.

Compatible coil diameters and contact shoe settings depend on the selected design.

Custom engineering is available for requirements beyond the stated family ranges.

Working Principle

The tong is positioned over a horizontal coil by the overhead crane. An automatic mechanical latch holds the gripping arms open when the attachment is unloaded. During lifting, the load-actuated scissor linkage moves the arms into engagement, and arm opening under load is prevented. The mechanical advantage of the linkage enables the attachment to accommodate different coil widths within its designed operating range. Protective polyamide pads are used at coil contact areas. Where coil diameters vary substantially beyond the selected working range, mechanical adjustment of the contact shoes may be required.

Selection

The appropriate configuration is defined by maximum coil weight, minimum and maximum widths, inside and outside diameters, centre of gravity, storage arrangement, clearance between adjacent coils, crane interface and duty cycle. The permissible bore and outside-diameter range, contact shoe positions and gripping geometry must be checked independently. The 25-tonne capacity and 300–2,200 mm width range describe the product family; they do not imply that every load and dimension combination is covered by one attachment.

Custom engineering and application options

Project-specific designs may be considered for loads above 25 tonnes, coil widths outside 300–2,200 mm, specialized crane connections and unusual storage arrangements. Where coil diameters vary significantly, an adjustable mechanical contact shoe arrangement may be incorporated. Protective polyamide pads and a parking stand are included in the offered equipment solution; any additional configuration is determined by the load and operating requirements.

Questions

What capacity and coil width range does the Mechanical Coil Tong offer?

The HENDL Mechanical Coil Tong family covers lifting capacities up to 25 metric tonnes and coil widths of 300–2,200 mm. The suitable attachment is selected for the actual weight and geometry. Higher capacities or other dimensions may be assessed through custom engineering.

Is manual adjustment needed for different coil widths and diameters?

The mechanical advantage of the scissor linkage accommodates different coil widths within its designed operating range. Coil diameter limits still apply. If diameters vary substantially, mechanical adjustment of the contact shoes may be necessary.

Does the tong require electric power, and can its arms open under load?

No electrically powered gripping drive is required. The automatic mechanical latch holds the arms open when unloaded, while opening during lifting is prevented. Protective polyamide pads and a parking stand are also provided.
