Product introduction
The HENDL Manual Handwheel Horizontal Tong is a mechanical below-the-hook lifting attachment designed to lift and transfer horizontally positioned steel and metal coils using an overhead crane. The product family offers lifting capacities up to 10 metric tonnes and coil widths from 300 to 2,200 mm. Its manually adjustable arms and compact arrangement are particularly useful in applications with limited crane headroom. Arm geometry can be adapted to special coil widths and a wide range of coil diameters.
Standard Capacity And Dimensions
- Lifting capacity
- up to 10 metric tonnes.
- Coil width
- 300–2,200 mm.
- Arm adjustment
- manual handwheel driving a trapezoidal lead screw.
The handwheel positions the arms and does not apply additional clamping force.
The screw drive offers resistance to back-driving and a self-locking tendency but is not a separate positive safety lock.
Protective contact pads can be supplied in polyurethane, rubber or polyamide.
Suitable for low-headroom applications.
Special widths and diameters are engineered to order.
Working Principle
The operator turns the handwheel to adjust the position of the gripping arms to suit the coil geometry. The handwheel is used for mechanical positioning, not to apply additional squeezing force to the coil. Arm movement is transmitted through a trapezoidal lead screw. The screw drive provides substantial frictional resistance to back-driving and exhibits a self-locking tendency; however, it is not a separate positive mechanical or safety lock. Arm position, contact surfaces, load geometry and crane connection must be checked before lifting.
Selection
Equipment selection considers maximum coil weight, minimum and maximum widths, inside and outside diameters, centre of gravity, arm reach, crane hook arrangement and available headroom. The published capacity of up to 10 tonnes and 300–2,200 mm width range describe the product family; they do not mean every combination is covered by a single unit. Arm geometry can be redesigned for substantially different coil diameters. The contact-pad material is chosen according to coil surface sensitivity and operating conditions.
Custom dimensions and application-specific options
Arm geometry can be adapted for non-standard coil widths and diameter ranges. Protective contact pads can be selected in polyurethane, rubber or polyamide to suit the load surface. Where crane headroom is restricted, the attachment and suspension geometry can be configured for the application. These adaptations do not imply that any single existing unit handles an unlimited range of dimensions.

If multiple coil diameters will be handled, provide the complete diameter range and, where possible, photographs or layout drawings.
Questions
What are the lifting capacity and coil width range?
The HENDL product family offers solutions up to 10 metric tonnes and for coil widths from 300 to 2,200 mm. Different coil widths and diameters can be addressed with application-specific arm geometry. Suitability is assessed for each combination of weight and dimensions.
Does the handwheel clamp the coil, and is the screw fully self-locking?
No. The handwheel mechanically positions the arms; it is not intended to apply additional squeezing force. The trapezoidal lead screw provides substantial resistance to back-driving and has a self-locking tendency. This must not be interpreted as a separate safety lock or guaranteed self-locking under all conditions.
Can it be used with limited headroom, and how is the coil surface protected?
Yes. Its compact mechanical arrangement offers an advantage where crane headroom is limited. Polyurethane, rubber or polyamide contact pads can be selected according to the coil surface and operating conditions.
