Spring-Driven Cable Reels

Spring-driven cable reels are systems that allow the power cables of cranes and moving industrial equipment to unwind and rewind during operation.

Spring-driven cable reel

These systems carry the cable in a controlled manner between moving equipment and a fixed power supply point, using a mechanical spring mechanism to rewind the cable.

Within the Koreel product range, HENDL offers spring-driven cable reel options for different operating conditions and mounting arrangements. The appropriate system is selected according to travel distance, cable characteristics, operating environment and mounting position.

How Does It Work?

In spring-driven cable reels, the cable unwinds from the drum as the moving equipment advances. During this movement, the spring mechanism stores the energy required for rewinding.

As the equipment returns, the torque generated by the spring mechanism rewinds the cable onto the drum.

The system helps guide the cable in an orderly manner along its travel path. For proper reel operation, cable length, travel distance, winding direction and mounting arrangement must be considered together.

Koreel Spring-Driven Cable Reels

Koreel spring-driven cable reels comprise product series designed for different applications and mounting requirements.

The product family includes the following series:

ECC series spring-driven cable reel

ECC

Compact spring-driven cable reels.

ECS series spring-driven cable reel

ECS

Spring-driven reels for multipole electrical connection requirements.

ECA series spring-driven cable reel

ECA

Compact spring-driven cable reels.

EA series spring-driven cable reel

EA

Spring-driven reels for longer travel distances.

EU series spring-driven cable reel

EU

Spring-driven reels for multipole connection arrangements.

EAJ series spring-driven cable reel

EAJ

Spring-driven reels with externally adjustable spring pulling force.

Cable capacity, electrical characteristics, mechanical dimensions and operating limits are evaluated separately for each model in the series.

System Features and Options

Spring-Mechanism Rewinding

The spring mechanism rewinds the cable onto the drum as the moving equipment returns. The system is used with cable guidance and mounting components suitable for the operating movement.

Transmission of Power, Data and Control Signals

With suitable reel and electrical connection configurations, solutions for transmitting data and control signals as well as electrical power may also be considered.

The type of signal to be transmitted and the cable requirements must be checked against the selected reel model.

Options for the Operating Environment

Indoor or outdoor conditions, environmental influences and required protection characteristics are considered when selecting a reel.

Material, surface protection and enclosure options depend on the technical specifications of the relevant model.

Cable Options

Reel systems are assessed for compatibility with the cable type and movement characteristics required by the application.

Supply of the flexible power cable together with the reel may be considered separately, depending on the requested product configuration.

Other Cable and Hose Reel Systems

Motor-Driven Cable Reels

Motor-driven cable reels are systems in which an electric motor drives the cable winding movement.

Unlike spring-driven reels, winding is powered by a motor. The suitable drive and control arrangement is determined according to the operating conditions of the moving equipment.

Air and Hydraulic Hose Reels

Air and hydraulic hose reels are used to unwind and rewind hoses that carry fluids to moving equipment.

Hose diameter, operating pressure, travel distance and connection arrangement are important selection criteria for these systems.

Hose reels have technical requirements different from those of electrical cable reels.

System Selection

The following information is considered when selecting a suitable cable reel:

  • Total length of the cable or hose
  • Travel distance of the moving equipment
  • Required electrical current and voltage
  • Cable type, outer diameter and number of cores
  • Cable winding direction and reel mounting position
  • Travel speed and operating frequency
  • Indoor or outdoor conditions
  • Layout of the crane or moving equipment
  • Need to transmit data or control signals
